Gettin' Real: A Real Estate Blog

Many people say they don't really feel like an adult until they buy their first home. It is a huge step. Rather than letting a landlord make all important repairs, you take on this responsibility yourself. You also get to build equity in the home over time, which can be a rather smart investment. At the same time, buying your first home can be a little intimidating. You may have questions about applying for a mortgage, setting a budget, and shopping efficiently. We hope to answer those questions with our helpful content. Your real estate agent is a good source of information, and so is this blog.

Are You Looking At Lakefront Houses For Sale?

Have you decided that you love the lake so much that you want a lakefront house as your second home? Maybe you and your family have often stayed at rental homes when you've taken your annual summer vacations. Instead of putting your money into something that won't ever be yours, maybe you've decided it's time to take the plunge. You're ready to buy a lakefront house, and now you just need to decide what kind of house you want.

Obviously, the amount of money you are willing to spend on a second home will play a big part in your decision. However, there are other things to consider, too.

The Outside Style

Before you meet with an agent, drive around the entire area to see the styles of houses that other people have. You might even find For Sale By Owner signs in front of some of the houses you like. But, if you could choose your dream lake house, consider what that would be.

For instance, maybe you would love a rustic cabin for your lake house.

Another idea is to choose a charming cottage-style house.

A contemporary house with angular lines as the design is yet another idea.

Or, go with a traditional house similar to the one you have at your first home.

The Inside Design

The design of the lakefront house will be another important thing to consider. For instance, do you want one master bedroom for you and your spouse with a large loft for the kids to sleep in?

Maybe you want the loft, the master bedroom, and another bedroom for times that you have guests at your house.

Will you want both a family room and a living room, or just one great room?

What about the kitchen? Will you be using it to entertain in? If so, you probably want a spacious kitchen with a large island as part of the design.

Besides the design for the outside of the house and the floor plan for the inside, there are other things for you to consider. For instance, if you have a boat, or if you will be buying a boat, you will more than likely want a house that has a boat dock on the property.

Maybe you want a swimming pool at your home. If you find a house with a pool already in the backyard, you'll be in luck. Otherwise, look for a house with a large backyard so that you can build a pool yourself.
