Gettin' Real: A Real Estate Blog

Many people say they don't really feel like an adult until they buy their first home. It is a huge step. Rather than letting a landlord make all important repairs, you take on this responsibility yourself. You also get to build equity in the home over time, which can be a rather smart investment. At the same time, buying your first home can be a little intimidating. You may have questions about applying for a mortgage, setting a budget, and shopping efficiently. We hope to answer those questions with our helpful content. Your real estate agent is a good source of information, and so is this blog.

3 Pet-Friendly Features To Look For In Your Next Luxury Apartment

Many luxury apartment complexes accept pets, but there are some specific features you should look for if you have a furry friend. Here are three features in a new luxury apartment that every four-legged family member will appreciate.

1. Safe Outdoor Space

Whether it's a fenced-in yard or nearby dog park, make sure there is a safe space for your pet to get plenty of fresh air and sunshine. Some luxury apartments can seem like small spaces and all pets appreciate having some outdoor time to run and play.

When looking at a new luxury apartment, ask the manager if there is a safe space nearby where you can let your pet roam. This is also a great time to clarify expectations related to cleaning up after your pet. Some apartments may have outdoor space where they'd rather pets didn't relieve themselves at all, while others may have designated spaces just for that purpose.

Even if there is not a contained outdoor space, consider whether the neighborhood is walkable, experiences heavy street traffic, or has many other pets living nearby. You may even ask some neighbors where they let their pets outside.

2. Comfy Indoor Space

Even if your new luxury apartment has a great outdoor space, many pets spend most of their lives indoors. You know your pet and what makes him most comfortable, so look for those things while touring your apartment.

Does your cat appreciate a nice sunny window space to bask away the afternoon? Would your dog love a long hallway to chase tennis balls? Is this luxury apartment warm or cool enough to keep your pets comfortable? Does your elderly pet have trouble going up or downstairs?

Of course, what makes your pet feel most at home is you, but they will also appreciate your help in scouting out a space where they will spend their time in a comfortable environment for the times you're away.

3. Pet Health Resources

Another consideration is the availability of health and support resources for your pet if the need arises. Look up how close your new luxury apartment is to a veterinary clinic and what animal medical resources are available in your new community. Not only will you gain peace of mind, but you'll already know where to go in the case of an emergency.

Other pet-friendly resources that may be helpful to have in the neighborhood are boarding and grooming facilities, pet food and accessory retailers, and local pet sitters.
